Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins has confirmed the cancellation of the Max period romantic comedy series. Starring Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi, the show follows the adventures of Stede Bonnet, a wealthy land-owner turned pirate, and his eventual encounter with the infamous Blackbeard. Premiering in 2022, the show quickly gained a devoted following but unfortunately will not be returning for a third season.
Jenkins took to Instagram to announce the end of the show, expressing gratitude for the fan campaigns to save it. Despite the show's popularity and critical acclaim, including praise for its LGBTQ+ representation, HBO and Max decided to end it due to insufficient streaming numbers.
Many fans were shocked by the cancellation, feeling that the story of Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard was left incomplete. However, Taika Waititi, who portrayed Blackbeard, stated in a previous interview that he believed the season 2 finale provided a fitting conclusion to the characters' journeys.
Our Flag Means Death blended romantic comedy with period drama, offering a unique take on pirate adventures. The series was lauded for its positive LGBTQ+ representation and its engaging plotlines. Despite its cancellation, the show remains available for streaming on Max for fans to enjoy.
