'Our baby died when car crashed into pram outside hospital - we'll never know why'

The devastated mum and dad of an eight-month-old baby girl who died when a car ploughed into her pram outside a hospital have said they still don't know why the crash happened.

Little Mabli Cariad Hall died from a traumatic brain injury four days after a car collided with pedestrians just before noon on June 21.

The baby was being put in her pushchair by her dad when the crash took place, reports at the time said, when the car struck, injuring her and two others outside Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.

An inquest into the tot's death was opened today and heard that Mabli was airlifted to a hospital in Cardiff after the crash and then transferred to Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, but died from her injuries in the early hours of June 25.

Carrie Sheridan, coroner's officer for Dyfed-Powys Police, told the hearing: "At 11:50am on June 21 police received an emergency call reporting a collision involving a car and pedestrians having occurred on an unclassified road outside Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest. Mabli Cariad Hall from Neath was one of the pedestrians involved."

Pc Sheridan added that Mabli was in her pram at the time of the collision and was initially taken to the emergency department at Withybush Hospital, before being transferred to Cardiff and later to Bristol. Despite the best efforts of medical teams, Mabli, from Tonna, Neath Port Talbot, died at 1.25am on June 25.

She added: "The cause of death is that of severe traumatic brain injury. Police have launched a full investigation with ongoing enquiries." The driver of the car was also taken to hospital with what police described at the time as "serious, non-life-threatening injuries". They have since been released from the hospital.

In a statement, Mabli's family said: "The loss of Mabli Cariad has changed all our lives forever. The pain and grief we are suffering as a family is indescribable.

"During this terribly painful time, we still have no answer to the central question we inevitably ask regarding the tragic loss of our beautiful baby girl - 'Why did this happen?'

"The opening of this inquest and the ongoing efforts of Dyfed-Powys police will hopefully provide the information we need to answer this question. As a family, we also hope that the outcome of this process will help reduce the risk of such a tragedy happening to others in future."

Mr Bennett offered his condolences to Mabli's family and, citing the ongoing police investigation, adjourned the inquest until January 25 next year.
