Ospreys swoop to land Wales international Owen Williams

Wales international Owen Williams is joining the Ospreys as short-term cover for the injured Gareth Anscombe.

The 30-year-old returned from Japan last year to play in the Gallagher Premiership with Worcester Warriors but was left without a club after the Sixways outfit encountered major financial issues earlier this term, with the company holding player contracts going into liquidation. That left members of the squad unemployed.

The Ospreys have moved for him as a temporary replacement for Anscombe, who sustained a bad looking shoulder injury in Wales' game against Australia on November 26.

The Swansea.com Stadium side do have Stephen Myler in their squad, but he is 38 and sidelined by injury, anyway, leaving youngster Jack Walsh as their only available specialist No. 10.

Three-cap Williams last played for Wales under Warren Gatland in 2017, when he featured at inside centre against New Zealand.

He was picked to face Ireland in the 2020 Six Nations but had to pull out after sustaining an injury during the warm-up.

Now he is on his way back to Wales, having played for the Scarlets before leaving for Leicester Tigers in 2013.
