Oscars organisers are launching a formal review after Will Smith smacked Chris Rock during the live ceremony on Sunday night.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has issued another statement following the incident which happened in front of a live audience full of A-listers.
Will slapped Chris in the face over his joke about wife Jada Pinkett Smith's hair.
Jada, who has alopecia, didn't look impressed at all after Chris told her he was looking forward to seeing her in GI Jane 2 - a role Demi Moore famously shaved her head for.
The statement read: "The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night's show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law."
The statement released by AMPAS follows a late night tweet after the altercation, in which they posted: "The Academy does not condone violence of any form."
The probe could see Will ejected from AMPAS or suffer some sort of suspension from the organisation and its events, including next year's Oscars.
Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed Chris declined to file a police report against the actor.
A spokesperson for the force says it is "aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards programme...[which] involved one individual slapping another".
"The individual involved has declined to file a police report. If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report."
Will - who went on to win Best Actor later in the evening - walked up to the stage and slapped the presenter, before returning to his seat and yelling: "Keep my wife's name out of your f****** mouth."
Chris appeared shocked by the incident, as he tried to resume presenting the best documentary feature category.
He said: "That was the greatest night in the history of television."
After Chris left the stage, rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs appeared and quipped: "Will and Chris, we're going to solve this like family. Right now we’re moving on with love. Everybody make some nose."
Later on in the evening, Will went on to win his first Oscar for his performance in King Richard and apologised on stage for his previous actions.
"Love will make you do crazy things," the emotional winner confessed, referencing his outburst.
