The Oscars have given audiences some jaw-dropping moments over the years, including embarrassing wardrobe malfunctions, stumbles on stage, and even a hosting scandal.
The 2022 ceremony will be remembered for all the wrong reasons as Will Smith made headlines around the world for storming on stage and smacking presenter Chris Rock.
The outburst came as Chris cracked jokes about Will's wife Jada and her hair loss. The actress has spoken publicly about her battle with alopecia and decision to shave her head.
Will went on to sob as he picked up the Best Actor gong, for his role in King Richard as he tried to move on from the shock moment by telling the audience 'it's all love.'
But Will is not the only famous face to become an unexpected talking point of the prestigious bash.
Since the Academy Awards began in 1927, the biggest stars in Hollywood have gathered to see who will walk away with one of the coveted gold statues.
But it’s usually the antics off stage that hit the headlines, from ripped dresses, falling into the audience, and hosts being sacked just days before the ceremony.
We take a look at the biggest - and most embarrassing - moments seen at the Oscars in recent years…
Gwyneth Paltrow’s epic wardrobe fail (2002)
Gwyneth was the toast of Hollywood at the Oscars in 2002, having won the Best Actress honour at the ceremony just a few years before.
She stunned viewers with her bubblegum pink ballgown when she scooped the award in 1999 for her role in Shakespeare in Love, but for the big bash three years later, she wore a lacklustre and unflattering Alexander McQueen gown.
Gwyneth was heavily criticised for her crimes against fashion, as she teamed the black and grey dress with heavy eye make-up and her hair in milkmaid plaits on her head - but she hit the headlines for failing to wear a bra, leaving her exposed for all the world to see.
“I should have worn a bra and I should have just had simple beachy hair and less make-up,” she confessed, as she looked back on her faux pas in 2013.
Moonlight and La La Land (2017)
One of the biggest - and most shocking - Oscars moments was when Damian Chazelle’s movie-musical was wrongly announced as the winner of Best Picture.
Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty reunited to present the evening’s final award, and the crowd erupted in applause as it was revealed the movie, starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, had won the biggest gong of the night.
However, just minutes after the cast, producers and director of La La Land took to the stage, it was revealed Moonlight had in fact won Best Picture, prompting gasps and screams of shock.
“There’s a mistake," producer Jordan Horowitz told the audience. "Moonlight, you guys won Best Picture. This is not a joke.”
Warren confirmed he had opened the envelope only to see Emma Stone’s name on the card as the winner of Best Actress, and was lost for words.
“I want to tell you what happened. I opened the envelope, and it said Emma Stone, La La Land. That's why I took such a long look at Faye, and at you [the audience], I wasn't trying to be funny,” he said.
PricewaterhouseCoopers, which handles the Oscar envelopes, later apologised for the gaffe.
Anne Hathway’s unfortunate dress (2013)
The revered star was one of the favourites to win Best Supporting Actress at the 2013 Academy Awards, for her stunning turn as Fantine in the big-screen version of the hit musical Les Misérables.
Anne stunned onlookers when she arrived at the bash wearing a blush pink Prada column gown, which featured an unfortunate seam on the chest, making it look like her nipples were on show.
She had already courted controversy by declining to wear a gown by her close friend Valentino, and even issued an apology for not wearing one of his creations, claiming she was forced to change her mind at the last-minute because Amanda Seyfried was wearing a similar dress.
Anne later joked about the embarrassing dress, and in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar in 2014, she shared her worries over the gown to husband Adam Schulman minutes before they were due to arrive on the red carpet.
“I look in the mirror, turn to Adam, and say, ‘It looks like my nipples are hard.’ He says, ‘You look beautiful. Your nipples look pointy. The red carpet’s about to close. We gotta go,’” she recalled.
Blanca Blanco’s scandalous revealing dress (2017)
The actress looked sensational as she arrived at the ceremony that year in a dramatic yellow and black gown, with the thigh-high split showing off her enviable pins.
However, the slit was so high - up to her hip bones - it almost exposed her on the red carpet, prompting her to issue a statement following the ceremony, insisting that she was wearing underwear.
"I had a bodysuit on ... like a swimsuit, for some reason the pictures are looking like I have nothing. It was a nude colour, it matches my skin, so I wasn't naked,” she told the Daily Mail at the time.
“I didn't think 'I'm going to expose myself at the Oscars', that was not the idea. It was not a strategy or anything,” she fired.
Jennifer Lawrence’s iconic tumble (2013)
The actress arrived at the Oscars as a red-hot favourite to take home one of the biggest prizes of the night, Best Actress.
Jennifer made waves with her stunning performance in Silver Linings Playbook, and when her name was read out, she gracefully made her way to the stage.
But disaster struck when her foot got caught on her stunning Dior Haute Couture gown, tripping her up and leaving her laid flat out on the stairs.
She made a quick recovery, and shook off the help of Hugh Jackman, who rushed to her aid when he saw her tumble.
“Thank you!” she began her acceptance speech, as she stood at the podium clutching her Oscar.
“You guys are just standing up ’cause you feel bad that I fell and that’s really embarrassing, but thank you.”
The following year, Jennifer seemingly made it an Oscars tradition as she fell over while walking down the red carpet.
“The cone hit me, I've cut my shin, how is my dress not dirty,” she quipped when asked about the fall.
Kevin Hart’s dodgy tweets cost him Oscars gig (2019)
The funnyman was over the moon when it was announced in December 2018 that he had landed the coveted gig of presenting the Academy Awards.
“I am blown away simply because this has been a goal on my list for a long time….To be able to join the legendary list of host that have graced that stage is unbelievable,” he wrote when the news broke.
However, Kevin and the Oscars organisers were hit with a backlash, when homophobic jokes shared by the comedian on social media were unearthed.
The Ride Along star addressed the outrage, and seemingly caused more anger as he refused to apologise for the old tweets.
“I passed on the apology … I’ve addressed this several times. This is not the first time this has come up. I’ve addressed it. I’ve spoken on it. I’ve said where the rights and wrongs were,” Kevin said.
Just 24 hours later, the comedian announced he was pulling out of hosting the Oscars, and finally apologised to the LGBTQ community for his old offensive comments.
“I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscars….this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists,” he said.
Kevin wasn’t replaced, and the ceremony remained hostless.
Rami Malek falling off stage (2019)
Another headline-hitting incident that surrounded the beleaguered 2019 ceremony was Best Actor winner Rami Malek stacking it as he accepted his award.
He was trying to exit the stage after scooping the gong, but missed his footing, and ended up falling in between the stage and the area for the orchestra, prompting terrified celebrity audience members to try and rush to his aid.
Rami seemed in good spirits despite the embarrassing blunder, and pulled a series of funny faces as he was helped up on to one of the front row seats.
The actor, who won for his portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the musical biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, was tended to by paramedics, before being allowed to leave the theatre with no apparent injuries.
Katy Perry’s ripped dress (2013)
The pop star turned heads when she arrived at the official Vanity Fair bash in a bronze metallic sequinned Jean Paul Gaultier couture dress with a unique shredded skirt.
The gorgeous gown glittered as she headed into the bash, and Katy finished off her glam look with a pair of black stiletto sandals and a small clutch bag.
But her awkward wardrobe mishap was captured when she was pictured leaning over a cream sofa booth to watch the Oscars live feed alongside James Corden.
Katy had managed to inadvertently expose her bum as her dress had ripped where the bodice of her dress joined the skirt, leaving a sheer strip of fabric clearly visible.
