Oscars 2025 LIVE: Stars attend afterparties as fans react to Academy Awards ceremony

Anora dominated this year’s Oscars, taking home the award for Best Picture, Best Actress for Mikey Madison, and Best Director for Sean Baker.

The independent film tells the story of a sex worker who dances at a strip club and meets — and marries — the son of a Russian oligarch. It takes a human-centred approach to filmmaking, focusing on themes of identity, resilience and a complex journey towards self-discovery.

Accepting the win, director Baker said: "I want to thank the Academy for recognising a truly independent film."

Meanwhile, Adrien Brody clinched the Best Actor award for his powerful performance in The Brutalist, marking his second victory in this category.

Earlier in the night, an emotional Zoe Saldana broke down in tears as she picked up the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Emilia Perez, while Kieran Culkin was honoured as Best Supporting Actor.

Conclave, Wicked, The Substance, Emilia Pérez, and Dune: Part Two each took home awards.

The ceremony took place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, with UK viewers able to catch all the glamour and drama in the early hours of Monday morning on ITV1 and ITVX.

James Bond fans share female 007 theories after Oscars tribute

09:18 , Ekin Karasin

James Bond fans are convinced that the next 007 could be a woman after a surprising tribute at the 2025 Oscars left them speculating.

During Sunday night’s ceremony, host Conan O’Brien teased a special segment honouring the iconic spy and longtime producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who were announced as winners of the Academy’s Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award and given Oscar statuettes at the Governors Awards.

A montage from various Bond films played before The Substance actress Margaret Qualley appeared in a red dress and danced along to the famous 007 theme tune.

As she finished Thai rapper and singer Lisa arrived on the stage to sing Live And Let Die, by Wings, with Doja Cat performing Dame Shirley Bassey’s Diamonds Are Forever. Also performing was Escapism singer Raye who sang Adele’s Skyfall.

Fans quickly began speculating that the all-female performances could be a subtle hint that the franchise is gearing up to introduce a female 007.

One person claimed on Reddit: “I have a sneaking suspicion they’re about to announce female lead for a Bond movie. Something about the energy idk.”

“Are they announcing a female Bond?” another suggested.

"I feel so fortunate" says Brody in acceptance speech

04:55 , Megan Howe

The American actor, 51, who is now a two-time Academy Award winner, has won a slew of awards this season for his role playing Hungarian-Jewish architect Laszlo Toth, who flees from post-war Europe to the US.

In his acceptance speech he said he shares the award with his partner Georgina Chapman, the ex-wife of disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, and thanked his immigrant parents for giving him the "strength to pursue this dream".

"If I may just humbly begin by giving thanks for the tremendous outpouring of love that I've felt from this world, and every individual that has treated me with respect and appreciation," he said.

"I feel so fortunate. Acting is a very fragile profession. It looks very glamorous and certain moments, it is, but the one thing that I've gained, having the privilege to come back here, is to have some perspective.

"And no matter where you are in your career, no matter what you've accomplished, it can all go away.

"And I think what makes this night most special is the awareness of that and the gratitude that I have to still do the work that I love."

Oscars show to include tributes to wildfire-ravaged Los Angeles

Sunday 2 March 2025 20:45 , Josh Salisbury

Tonight’s Academy Awards will showcase tributes to Los Angeles, which was ravaged by wildfires in January,

Host and comedian Conan O'Brien said he planned to mix jokes, celebrations of filmmakers and serious moments including tributes to Los Angeles as it recovers from January's wildfires.

He likely will address U.S. politics but not dwell on it, he said.

"Good jokes are really important, but there's also more than that," O'Brien told reporters as he prepared for his first Oscars hosting gig.

"We're trying to go for different tones, different textures."

The Academy Awards, the highest honors in the film business, has no clear frontrunner among "Anora," "The Brutalist," "Conclave" and other movies contending for the prestigious best picture prize.

Timothee Chalamet and Demi Moore are vying for their first Oscars at the red-carpet ceremony in Hollywood. The show will air from 12am GMT on Monday.

Can this year's show lift Hollywood's spirits?

Sunday 2 March 2025 19:58 , Josh Salisbury

This year's Oscars come after a turbulent year for the film industry. Ticket sales were down from the previous year and more significantly from pre-pandemic times.

The strikes of 2023 played havoc with release schedules in 2024. Many studios pulled back on production, leaving many out of work. The fires, in January, only added to the pain.

Last year's telecast, propelled by the twin blockbusters of "Oppenheimer" and "Barbie," led the Oscars to a four-year viewership high, with 19.5 million viewers. This year, with smaller independent films favored in the most prominent awards, the academy will be tested to draw as large of an audience.

With a not particularly starry array of best song nominees, the academy has done away with performances of original songs this year. But there will be music, including a performance by "Wicked" stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, and a tribute to the late Quincy Jones, with Queen Latifah.

Last year's acting winners — Emma Stone, Robert Downey Jr., Cillian Murphy, Da'Vine Joy Randolph — will also take part in the ceremony. The acting awards won't get the "fab five" treatment, with five previous winners per category, but producers say it will be used for some other categories that "maybe don't normally get the spotlight on the Oscar stage."

The ceremony will be taking place days following the death of Gene Hackman. The 95-year-old two-time Oscar winner and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead Wednesday at their New Mexico home.

Who is favourite for Oscars race?

Sunday 2 March 2025 15:54 , Josh Salisbury

The lead nominee is Netflix's Emilia Pérez with 13 nominations, but that film has seen its chances crater following uproar over years-old offensive tweets by its star Karla Sofía Gascón, the first openly trans actor nominated for best actress.

The favorite is Sean Baker's Anora, about a sex worker who weds the son of a Russian oligarch.

The Neon release, the Cannes Palme d'Or winner, won with the producers, directors and writers guild. The only movie with the same resume to not win best picture is Brokeback Mountain.

Its closest competition is "Conclave," the papal thriller starring Ralph Fiennes.

It won at the BAFTAs and the SAG Awards, wins that came just as Pope Francis was hospitalized for double pneumonia. Oscar voting concluded before the pope fell ill.

Also in the mix are The Brutalist, nominated for 10 awards, and the musical hit Wicked, also with 10 nominations. Several of the early craft Oscars could be shared between Wicked and Dune: Part Two.
