Paul Mescal has been nominated for Best Actor for playing a Scots dad in the film Aftersun. The Irishman is up against the likes of Austin Butler and Colin Farrell.
Aftersun is a 2022 drama written and directed by Charlotte Wells, set in the early 2000s, and is about an 11-year-old Scottish girl called Sophie, played by Frankie Corio. The youngster is on vacation with her father, Callum, played by Paul Mescal, at a Turkish resort on the eve of his 31st birthday.
The film received universal acclaim from critics, who praised Wells' direction and screenplay, and the performances of Mescal along with other cast members. It was also named one of the best films of 2022 by the National Board of Review.
According to People, Paul, 26, reacted to his nomination in a statement saying: "This is truly a special moment for everyone involved in Aftersun.
"To be recognised by the Academy is such an insane honour and I'm so utterly grateful. I want to dedicate this nomination to my two friends Charlotte and Frankie who I love dearly! This is bananas, thank you!"
Many of his fans have been reacting to the news on social media, with one saying: "Paul Mescal my BELOVED you earned it sweetie!"
Another added: "Now Paul Mescal is nominated for an Oscar as he should be." A third said: "This is the man of dreams!"
