The 2022 Oscar nominations didn’t go according to script for some of Hollywood’s top stars — including Lady Gaga.
The Manhattan-born actress received nominations at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards for her portrayal of socialite-turned-convict Patrizia Reggiani in “House of Gucci,” but was among the most surprising omissions when the Academy Award finalists were unveiled Tuesday.
Gaga, 35, was left out of a best actress category where three nominees also played real-life figures: Kristen Stewart for the Princess Diana movie “Spencer”; Jessica Chastain for the televangelist biopic “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”; and Nicole Kidman for her performance as Lucille Ball in “Being the Ricardos.”
The other nominees in the category are Olivia Colman for the psychological thriller “The Lost Daughter” and Penélope Cruz for the twist-filled Spanish drama “Parallel Mothers.”
Gaga lost out to Kidman at the Golden Globes for best actress in a drama, but was named best actress by the New York Film Critics Circle.
Other notable stars who didn’t get Oscar nominations for best actress Tuesday include Jennifer Hudson, who played Aretha Franklin in “Respect,” and Rachel Zegler, who won the Golden Globe for best actress in a musical for her performance as Maria in “West Side Story.”
Additional surprises Tuesday included “Being the Ricardos” being left out in the best picture race, despite three of its stars being nominated for acting honors. The critically acclaimed musical “Tick, Tick... Boom!” also wasn’t nominated in the category, but star Andrew Garfield received a best actor nod for his portrayal of “Rent” writer Jonathan Larson.
No one from the star-studded cast of “Don’t Look Up” received acting nominations for the environmental satire, but the film was nominated for best picture. The movie, which is led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence and also features Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett, earned an ensemble cast nomination for the SAG Awards last month.
Likewise, Bradley Cooper wasn’t nominated for either of his buzzworthy performances in the carnival-set thriller “Nightmare Alley,” directed by Guillermo del Toro, or the coming-of-age story “Licorice Pizza,” helmed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
The 94th edition of the Academy Awards take place March 27 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
