Oscar Delp hit a new high in last Saturday’s 31-17 victory over the visiting Tennessee Volunteers, finishing out with four receptions for 56 yards and two touchdowns.
That made him Georgia’s second-leading receiver in total receptions for the night, but their first in scoring, earning him plenty of praise from quarterback Carson Beck as one of his most reliable targets within a corps of pass-catchers that has been notorious from drops this season.
“I thought we had a really good game plan going into it and our tight ends really stepped up. All of those guys made some really good plays,” Beck had said after the game.
“Obviously, Oscar was able to get into the end zone, and on that first touchdown pass, he made a great play on that ball down the middle. But I was super proud of him and the way he stepped up in this game.”
Delp kept that rolling into the next game quite literally with the first Georgia touchdown of the 59-21 win over UMass on Saturday, a 17-yarder from Beck that he took straight to the end zone.
Beck doesn’t see Delp’s sudden rise as a product of anything that he was lacking in previously.
“I don’t think anything was missing (before),” Beck said. Obviously, the play-calling and then obviously, him being the one who was in there. You know, those guys rotated a lot in the tight end room and we have a lot of talented tight ends. But I think he’s just been in the right spot and ended up making the plays.”
And the success Delp has had is a pure product of the work he has put in, now reaping the reward of more limelight after previously flying under the radar.
“Oscar’s working hard,” Smart said. “He competes… and these guys are workers… Carson (Beck) does a good job getting him the ball and I’m proud of those guys’ competitive nature.”
The way Delp tightroped down the sideline turned heads on what was no easy trip to the end zone to make.
“He kind of made that one (on the touchdown),” Smart said. “You can’t say it was a play-action… he broke a tackle and he burst on the sideline and got the ball across the goal line.”
How Delp continues to build upon his 2025 NFL Draft stock will be something to watch as the Bulldogs face in-state rival Georgia Tech on Friday.
