Oscar De La Hoya claims Floyd Mayweather rematch would out-sell Conor McGregor fight

Oscar De La Hoya has reiterated his call to fight Floyd Mayweather and believes a rematch would sell more pay-per-views than his previous fight with Conor McGregor.

The American star has frequently expressed his desire to face Mayweather for a second time and will look to make a return after missing out on his shot at Vitor Belfort.

Mayweather currently holds the two highest selling pay-per-views of all time with his historic tilt against Manny Pacquiao recording over five million buys.

However De La Hoya, who was beaten by Mayweather in 2007, believes any exhibition could exceed that mark and has claimed that people now want to see "real fights".

"Obviously, he's (Mayweather) all about the money," De La Hoya told DAZN. "This would be probably the biggest fight out there for him. I believe it would be bigger than him fighting McGregor.

"It would be bigger than him fighting Logan Paul or whoever he's bound to fight next. I think that people want to see real fights. People want to see legend versus legend, champion versus champion. This is what we do. This is what we've done for practically all our lives.

"People, not that they're getting tired of seeing these exhibitions, but people want to see real fights. Fighters like Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, and myself, we are real legends who put it on the line and were in the ring for many years, fighting for world titles for decades.

"I strongly feel that a fight with Floyd would be massive, would be huge. That alone would attract Floyd Mayweather. I strongly feel a fight with me and Floyd can easily generate five million homes.

"With all the technology, there's so much that you can integrate in terms of publicising the event, in terms of making it that much bigger."

De La Hoya was unable to make his ring comeback last year after being hospitalised with coronavirus just weeks before his scheduled Triller appearance.

Mayweather has been enjoying himself on the exhibition circuit fighting YouTube star Paul in a clash last June that generated over one million pay-per-view buys.

He secured a huge pay cheque for previous clash with McGregor which sold around 4.3million pay-per-views in the crossover bout with the UFC star.

The event generated huge hype with a global press tour raising anticipation for one of the most iconic recent boxing events.

Next he will face YouTube star 'Money Kicks' with the fight staged on a helipad at the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah hotel in Dubai on February 20.

He has continued to train at a high-level for the bout with a sparring partner claiming he could still move like he was "in his 20's".

Mayweather's coach Gerald Tucker believes that Mayweather would be capable of making a full boxing comeback and will continue to fight two or three times a year in exhibitions, opening the door for De La Hoya.
