Orta and Kinnear's Leeds United message resonated with Marsch during Molineux miracle

Amid the enjoyment of the days that followed Leeds United’s miraculous Molineux win, Jesse Marsch will ensure more than just the players acknowledge their hard-earned success. In the aftermath of the victory in the West Midlands, Marsch was asked about the club’s well-known ‘side before self’ motto and his application of that to the first three weeks in the job.

The American actually drew upon a conversation he had had with chief executive Angus Kinnear and director of football Victor Orta before he landed in West Yorkshire. Marsch, who proves more and more inclusive with every passing press conference, ensured the team’s support staff were recognised in what they are bringing to the party at Thorp Arch.

“I heard from Victor, and from Angus, before I came about how good the young men are and not just that, how incredibly selfless the workers around the team are in the training centre and inside the club,” he said. “From the first day, I could feel that, I can feel the positive energy and I'm just really thankful to be here.

“The mentality of the group is really strong, really strong with everything they've been through this year, it's amazing. So, we have more work to do. We have to enjoy moments like this. I learned this in football, if you're only focused on every result, you have to enjoy moments.

“So we tried to enjoy also the last result [and] we'll enjoy this one, but then we'll get back to work and we'll try to get better so we can continue to control our own destiny.” Marsch now has two uninterrupted weeks at the training ground to bring his side up to scratch ahead of the visit of his former Red Bull stablemate, Ralph Hasenhuttl, to Elland Road.
