Orlando police: 10-year-old girl shot, killed woman after fight

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando police say a 10-year-old girl was taken into custody Monday night after she shot and killed a woman following a fight involving the child’s mother.

The victim was identified as 41-year-old Lashun Denise Rodgers, according to a news release from the Orlando Police Department.

The girl’s mother, 31-year-old Lakrisha Isaac, was arrested on charges of manslaughter by culpable negligence, child neglect, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and aggravated assault with a firearm, according to the agency.

The girl was released to the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families.

“Potential charges regarding the juvenile’s involvement have been referred to the State Attorney’s Office for review,” said Andrea Otero, OPD spokesperson.

Officers responded to the 1400 block of Mercy Drive around 11:49 p.m. after reports of a shooting, Otero said.

Police determined Rodgers and Isaac had gotten into a physical fight at the scene, Otero said. At some point during the fight, police say Isaac handed a bag to her daughter, which contained a firearm.

The girl got the gun out of the bag and fired two rounds, hitting Rodgers, according to OPD.

Rodgers was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, according to OPD.

“This is an ongoing investigation,” Otero said.

Miles Mulrain, a community activist with the organization Let Your Voice Be Heard, said the situation on the ground is “chaotic” but his group is working with both families involved to make sure they get assistance and “start the healing process.”

“This is a situation where everyone was failed in it,” he said. “The young lady was failed the most.”

Mulrain said he hopes authorities consider rehabilitation for the girl, rather than just punishment.

“We just had one person lose their life and another family being criminalized,” he said. “Everybody loses.”
