Klay Thompson‘s impending free agency continues to create discussions surrounding his future with the Golden State Warriors. His move to Golden State’s bench has likely created further curiosity surrounding his future in the Bay Area. Nevertheless, long-time NBA writer Marc Stein believes that Thompson will eventually reach an agreement with the Warriors front-office and re-sign in the summer.
However, should Thompson decide to test free agency, Stein has reported that the Orlando Magic are a team showing significant interest in Thompson. The veteran sharpshooter would likely slot into a starting role in the ever-improving Eastern Conference team while also playing a key leadership role within the young locker room.
“I am not budging from my belief that Klay Thompson will retire a Warrior,” Stein wrote. “…Something to file away: Orlando has been increasingly mentioned as a potential suitor for Thompson in free agency. The Magic’s available cap space is difficult to project this far out.”
Thompson’s future with the Warriors will continue to be a discussion point until he either signs a contract extension or signs with another team. As Stein believes, the most logical outcome is for Thomspon to remain with Golden State. He has meant to much to the franchise for them to let him leave during the summer.
Nevertheless, it’s inevitable that other teams around the league would show interest in Thompson. Draymond Green dealt with similar issues last season before ultimately signing a four-year $100 million extension with the Warriors are the start of the offseason. That’s still the most logical route for Thompson, too, regardless of the interest from elsewhere.
