The organisers of the new Bathgate Market have hit out thoughtless vandals who set fire to the site just days ahead of its reopening.
The site was targeted on Sunday as a deliberate fire was set that was part of a spate throughout the town.
Lucy Lawson said it was “disheartening” the vandalism had occurred after members of the West Lothian Litter Pickers had worked so hard to clean up the area.
But they stressed Bathgate Market is still on track for its grand launch this Saturday at Whitburn Road and despite the recent setback, they “refuse to let a few bad apples spoil the fun for everyone.”
Lucy said: “It deeply saddens me to share some disappointing news with you all. Just days away from the highly anticipated launch of Bathgate Market, we’ve encountered a setback.
“A fire was deliberately started at the Bathgate Market site. After discussing this unfortunate incident with the police it has become apparent that this was part of a series of fires ignited by young individuals in the Bathgate area.
“It’s disheartening to witness such acts of antisocial behaviour, especially after witnessing the tremendous effort put in by countless volunteers, including the West Lothian Litter Pickers, to revitalise this community.
“I’m are determined not to let this discourage me. Together, we will rise above these challenges and continue our mission of rejuvenating this area. Our commitment to creating a vibrant and welcoming space for everyone remains unwavering.
“Let’s stand united and show that acts of destruction will never overshadow our resilience and community spirit. Together, we can build a brighter future for Bathgate!”
The initial lease will see the market operate for five weeks from 9am to 2pm on a Saturday, with space for 60 stalls.
A new feature will be 20 pitches for car boot sales on a first come first served basis. To secure your spot, simply show up on the day between 8 am and 8:30 am. The prices for the car boot pitch are as follows: £10 for a car and £15 for a van or trailer.
Already lined up are traditional stalls including fruit and veg and a butcher but there will also be craft tables as well as food- including doughnuts.
