Two teenagers from Oregon are currently facing serious charges of murder and robbery after a disturbing incident at a Fred Meyer grocery store in Portland's Hazelwood neighborhood. The incident occurred on January 13, when police responded to reports of gunshots at the store around 3:50 p.m.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered 47-year-old Jonathan Trent on the ground with a gunshot wound. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Trent tragically succumbed to his injuries.
According to the initial investigation by the Portland Police Bureau, Trent was shot while trying to intervene in a robbery at the store. Subsequently, on January 23, two teenagers aged 15 and 16 were arrested on charges of murder and robbery in connection with the incident. Another 15-year-old, who is acquainted with the other two teens, was also arrested for a separate robbery that occurred on January 1.
Law enforcement officials suspect that the 16-year-old was involved in a series of four other robberies in the area during the first two weeks of the year. Sgt. Matt Jacobsen of the police department's major crimes unit expressed concern over the availability of firearms in the community and the involvement of youths in such violent crimes.
The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office is currently deliberating on whether the two teens charged with murder will be tried as adults. The identities of the teenagers have not been disclosed due to their status as minors, and they are currently being held at the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Facility.
Following the tragic loss of Jonathan Trent, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to support his son and the son's mother during this difficult time. Described as a man of warmth, kindness, and joy, Trent's untimely death has deeply impacted those who knew him.
