High fire risk warning in place until next Monday as Government issues advice

An Orange Forest Fire Warning has been issued by the Department of Agriculture from 3pm today until 6pm, May 29.

Condition Orange means there is a high fire risk, including wildfires. The Department has explained this is due to the higher temperatures across Ireland in the coming days, as well as the expected level of risk in all areas where hazardous fuels such as dead grasses, and shrub fuels such as heather and gorse exist.

The fire notice also reads: "While some areas may receive isolated rain showers during this time, most areas can be expected to see dry weather, higher temperatures and strongly elevated fire risks in areas with fire-prone vegetation types... Members of the public and visitors to recreational areas should cooperate with all requests regarding fire safety, obey all relevant bye-laws and be considerate in parking vehicles so as not to impede access by emergency vehicles."

The Department of Agriculture has also issued the following advice:

  • Do not light fires in and around forests or open land.
  • Do not attempt to intervene or fight fires under any circumstances.
  • Gather all family/group members and move to a safe fuel-free location such as a car park, upwind of the fire.
  • Telephone Fire and Rescue Services via 112 and report the fire and its location.
  • Evacuate if instructed to do so, and cooperate with all Emergency Service Instructions.

The Department has additionally advised members of the public to dispose of smoking materials responsibly.
