Oprah 'surprised' by 'bombshell' interview with Harry and Meghan

Oprah Winfrey's now infamous interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sent shockwaves throughout the royal family. Some 'bombshell' claims were dropped during the 2021 interview.

However, the 68-year-old American actor and TV presenter has revealed she did not set out to extract any juicy gossip from the couple. The Mirror reported that she just wanted to give the pair a platform to tell their story and was as surprised as the next person when they made several sensational claims during the chat.

Speaking to Gayle King on US TV channel CBS, she said: “I was as surprised by the bombshell as everybody else. I was doing an interview to offer them a platform to tell their story about why they left, and my number one intention was just clarity on 'why did you leave?’”

Oprah went on: "And so some of the things that were revealed in that interview came as a surprise to me and those surprises are now referred to as 'bombshell’, but I didn’t set out to do a ‘bombshell’ interview. I set out to do an interview, have a conversation that would allow them to tell their story.”

King responded: “And now people say, ‘reconciliation, reconciliation, we hope the brothers reconcile’, what do you say?”

Oprah quickly fired back: “I do not get into people’s family matters. Everybody who has experienced some challenges in their families with in-laws or brothers or sisters knows how difficult some of those situations can be and I’m sure that you know for the royal family, it’s no different.

“And nobody comes talks to me about their family business. I try and stay out of people’s family business!”

The headline-grabbing interview saw the Duke and Duchess of Sussex talk openly about their decision to quit as full-time members of the Royal Family. They claimed that "concerns" had been raised about the colour of their son Archie's skin and that Prince Charles, who is now King, had stopped taking Harry's phone calls.

Meghan revealed that she had had some suicidal thoughts but was prevented from seeking help. The couple also said they had secretly tied the knot in advance of their royal wedding and announced they were expecting their daughter.
