The event, held under the scorching sun on March 31, aimed to dissuade voters from granting Prime Minister Narendra Modi a third consecutive term in office.
The opposition leaders expressed concerns that continued rule by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could lead to the erosion of democratic values that form the bedrock of modern India. They highlighted the need for a united front in the upcoming elections to protect the democratic principles that the country was built upon.
Notably, the rally drew parallels to a historic gathering over four decades ago at the same venue, where opposition leaders mobilized the masses to bring about a significant political shift in the 1977 election. Back then, the defeat of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi marked a pivotal moment in India's democratic journey, signaling a victory for democracy over autocracy.
Many attendees at the recent rally voiced concerns about the current state of democracy in India, with some describing the country as teetering on the edge of dictatorship. They criticized the BJP government for allegedly manipulating the electoral process, suppressing opposition voices, and fueling religious divisions through its brand of Hindu nationalism.
Despite facing formidable challenges, Prime Minister Modi enjoys widespread popularity, as indicated by a 2023 Pew research report showing high approval ratings among Indian adults. However, opposition leaders accuse the ruling party of undermining democratic norms and institutions in their pursuit of power.
In response to the BJP's dominance, the opposition has formed the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) comprising 27 members. Yet, the alliance has encountered obstacles such as ideological differences, defections, and a lack of a clear prime ministerial candidate, raising concerns about its effectiveness in countering the ruling party.
Observers stress the importance of a strong opposition in a healthy democracy, emphasizing the need to preserve democratic values and institutions regardless of the election outcome.
