The latest box office numbers reveal that Christopher Nolan's 2023 historical drama, Oppenheimer, continues to make waves internationally almost nine months after its initial release in the United States. With a staggering $640.1 million in international earnings, Oppenheimer has now surpassed Nolan's previous highest-grossing film overseas, The Dark Knight Rises.
While Oppenheimer may reign supreme in international markets, it still falls short of Nolan's biggest hits, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, both of which crossed the billion-dollar mark globally. Oppenheimer's worldwide total currently stands at $970 million, trailing behind the Batman sequels.
Oppenheimer debuted alongside Barbie in July 2023, leading to the successful Barbenheimer phenomenon. Despite Oppenheimer's impressive performance, Barbie emerged as the top-grossing film of 2023 worldwide, raking in $1.44 billion in box office revenue.
Although Barbie outperformed Oppenheimer at the global box office, the tables turned at the Academy Awards. Oppenheimer received 13 nominations and secured seven wins, while Barbie only managed to clinch one Oscar for Best Original Song.
Currently, Oppenheimer is available for streaming on Peacock, offering audiences the chance to experience Nolan's acclaimed film from the comfort of their homes.
