Editor’s note: This article was written and published before Harlon Barnett was named interim head coach with Mark Dantonio rejoining the program in some capacity.

Mel Tucker is in hot water, and rightfully so, after a USA TODAY report detailed the sexual harassment claims involving Tucker by Brenda Tracy. Tucker’s actions are proving to not only be detrimental and painful for himself, but to Michigan State football’s players, fans and the program itself.
As Lansing State Journal reporter Graham Couch reported, it is likely Mel Tucker has coached his last game at Michigan State. I one-hundred percent agree with his sentiment: Tucker should have coached his last game in the green and white.
What’s next, then?
I would like to suggest giving the title of interim head coach to wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins. Hawkins is the epitome of what the Spartan family is all about, and he is someone who can keep this ship from sinking. Hawkins is loved by players and fans alike.
With a situation like this, there is a fear and a possibility players could check out, try to redshirt or transfer. It’s important to find someone who can bring the program together and keep some stability as it moves into it’s next chapter. Hawkins is someone the team could rally behind.
I believe Hawkins has a chance to not only keep this team going forward this season, but keep this roster together and keep the program on a winning path. He is a coach loved by many on the roster and the recruiting world.
It’s time to give the keys of the program to coach Hawk.
