The Kansas City Chiefs’ inability to land a wide receiver at Tuesday’s trade deadline has left the team with more questions about the position than answers. With nine games left to play, it seems that Patrick Mahomes is without a clear-cut top option in the passing game beyond tight end Travis Kelce.
The lack of depth at the receiver position creates a critical crisis for Kansas City’s vaunted air attack. Without threats on the boundary to clear space in the middle for Kelce, Andy Reid’s offensive scheme has become one-dimensional.
The veteran head coach seems wholly unable to trust his running game, too, despite Isiah Pacheco’s solid-if-not-spectacular numbers to start the season.
The Chiefs’ offense is now wholly reliant on Mahomes’ connection with Kelce, for better or worse. Unless one of Kansas City’s other pass catchers steps up in the coming weeks, fans should expect more of the same offensive dysfunction as the Chiefs fight for the top seed in the AFC’s playoffs.
