OPINION - Booze & junk food ‘fuelling young cancer epidemic’: Tech and Science Daily podcast

A study suggests obesity and alcohol consumption are fuelling a rise in global cancer cases among younger people.

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh and China’s Zhejiang University School of Medicine estimates there’s been a near 80 per cent increase in under-50s developing the disease between 1990 and 2019.

They say that while genetics are likely to play a part, smoking, alcohol consumption and diets high in meat and salt but low in fruit and milk are the “main risk factors”, along with excess weight, low physical activity and high blood sugar.

A silver lining in the data is researchers found cancer rates among younger Britons stabilised from 2010 to 2019, with the annual mortality rate from early-onset cancer “steadily decreasing”.
