OpenAI unveils ChatGPT Edu for universities

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Edu, a version of ChatGPT that brings responsibly used AI to universities

“We’re announcing ChatGPT Edu, a version of ChatGPT built for universities to responsibly deploy AI to students, faculty, researchers, and campus operations,” OpenAI's website reads in an announcement.

"Powered by GPT-4o, ChatGPT Edu can reason across text and vision and use advanced tools such as data analysis. This new offering includes enterprise-level security and controls and is affordable for educational institutions."

OpenAI says that they have already seen success with ChatGPT Enterprise at universities such as the University of Oxford, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, University of Texas at Austin, Arizona State University, and Columbia University.

Users of ChatGPT Edu can expect to get access to GPT-4o, the company’s flagship model that can interpret text, code, and do maths. Users will also be able to use advanced features such as data analytics, web browsing, and document summarisation.

The ability to build GPTs and custom versions of ChatGPT is also a feature, and they can be shared within university workspaces.

ChatGPT Edu is not just designed for lecturers, but for all staff and the students, too. Students can use it to review CVS but also get more in-depth knowledge on a subject or language. Meanwhile, it can help researchers write grant applications, and also assist the faculty with grading and feedback.

AI for Non-Profits

OpenAI has also launched OpenAI for non-profits, an initiative that aims to improve accessibility to ChatGPT Teams and ChatGPT Enterprise.

"Non-profits are already using ChatGPT to increase productivity and serve their communities in novel ways. Operational challenges, limited funding, and staffing shortages can often constrain their social impact," the company said.

"ChatGPT can help non-profits of all sizes overcome these barriers, enabling them to achieve more with fewer resources.

"Whether it’s drafting grant proposals, refining data analysis, or tailoring communication strategies for diverse audiences, ChatGPT can serve as a powerful force multiplier for non-profit organisations.

OpenAI shared some examples of how non-profits around the world are using its technology. Serenas, aiming to end violence against females in Brazil, uses ChatGPT to write grant proposals for international funding. While THINK South Africa uses the technology “to clean, analyse, and interpret health data”.

OpenAI was launched as a non-profit artificial intelligence research company in 2015.
