Following user feedback expressing concerns about the familiarity of the Sky voice, OpenAI announced a temporary pause on its usage to address these issues. The company emphasized that the voice was not intended to mimic Johansson's voice but was performed by a different professional actress using her natural speaking voice.
In a blog post, OpenAI detailed its rigorous process for selecting voice actors for ChatGPT, which involved collaboration with renowned casting directors and producers. Over 400 submissions were received, with 14 actors shortlisted for further consideration. The final selection of five voices underwent extensive discussions with the actors to ensure they understood the project's scope and intentions.
The chosen actors then participated in recording sessions in San Francisco before their voices were integrated into ChatGPT. OpenAI reiterated its commitment to adding new voices to the platform over time and highlighted its support for the voice acting community by offering compensation above industry standards for as long as their voices are utilized in the company's products.
