OpenAI Expands ‘Operator’ AI Agent to India, UK, and More

OpenAI has officially rolled out its AI agent called ‘Operator‘ to several countries, including India, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and the UK. It will be available for all the Pro subscribers of ChatGPT, who can now use this tool for various web-based tasks. The Operator is designed to autonomously interact with websites, handling tasks such as filling out forms, ordering groceries, and making reservations.

OpenAI announced the availability of Operator on social media platform X. The company confirmed that the AI agent will be accessible in most regions where ChatGPT is available. Initially launched in the U.S. last month, Operator runs in a separate browser window, allowing users to take control at any time while it handles tasks.

How Operator Works

Powered by OpenAI’s Computer-Using Agent (CUA) model, Operator employs advanced reasoning and vision capabilities to navigate graphical user interfaces. Basically, it’s an AI agent that can perform tasks like clicking buttons and filling out forms by mimicking human interactions. Users can instruct Operators by simply describing the task they need to complete, and the Operator will do it on the user’s behalf. It also supports custom instructions for specific websites.

The Operator is currently limited to ChatGPT’s $200-a-month Pro plan users, but OpenAI plans to expand access to other subscription tiers in the future. As competition in the AI agent space grows—with companies like Google and Anthropic developing similar tools—Operator aims to simplify online tasks while ensuring a user-friendly experience.

AI agents have become a major focus in the industry, with top tech companies highlighting their potential since early 2025. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman echoed this sentiment during the launch, stating, “AI agents are going to be a big trend in AI and really impact the work people can do, how productive they can be, how creative they can be, and what they can accomplish.”

On a similar note, OpenAI has also achieved a new milestone. The OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap recently revealed in his tweet that ChatGPT has surpassed 400 million weekly active users, up from 300 million in December 2024. This is a big achievement for OpenAI, as competition in the generative AI space continues to intensify following the successful launch of DeepSeek R1 and the recent release of Elon Musk’s Grok 3.
