Open champ Cameron Smith's answer to how many beers fit in Claret Jug after boozy promise

Cameron Smith has finally answered how many beers fit into the famous Claret Jug after his phenomenal performance crowned him Champion of The Open on Sunday. The Australian etched his name in history by capturing his first major title at St. Andrews this past weekend.

Moments after proudly hoisting the prestigious trophy above his head, the 28-year-old revealed he endeavoured to find out how many beers he could fit in the historic trophy. Now, a day after becoming champion and ascending to number two in the world rankings, Smith has his results.

“I guess everyone’s been asking the question of how many beers fit in the Claret Jug,” he said in a video posted on his Instagram account. "It’s pretty much exactly two. I had a good night last night with it.”

The golfer was seen welling up when accepting the Claret Jug after winning the 150th anniversary of the event. Smith carded a scintillating eight-under-par 64 in the final round to topple overnight leader Rory McIlroy.

"Jeez what a week. I'm going to fall apart here I know! I want to thank the team for all the hard work we've done," he said post-match. "The last couple of years it has really started to pay off and this one definitely makes it worth it.

“It was absolutely awesome out there, I thought the course was exactly how an Open Championship should be played; firm and fast, tough pins - it was just unreal." Smith’s victory at The Open was a win like no other, claiming the Claret Jug at the Home of Golf and the sport’s oldest competition.

Commenting on just how special it was to win the trademark event, the Aussie told Sky Sports: “It's just unreal. This place is so cool. "To have the 150th Open here and walk away with the win is just something that I've dreamt of. I didn't even know I was going to get this far and it's just awesome.

"It's unreal to look at these names on this trophy and to add mine. I'm lost for words.” It was heartbreak for Rory McIlroy who once again fell short of claiming a major and his eight-year drought continues.

The Northern Irishman said: “I'm disappointed obviously. I felt like I didn't do much wrong today, but I didn't do much right either. I got beaten by a better player this week. A 20-under par for four rounds of golf around here is really, really impressive.”
