The Canadian province of Ontario has decided to temporarily halt its retaliatory measures against the US following President Donald Trump's agreement to suspend tariffs on Canada for a month. This decision comes after Ontario Premier Doug Ford issued a warning that if the US were to impose tariffs at a later date, Ontario would not hesitate to remove American products from shelves or ban American companies from provincial procurement.
Previously, both British Columbia and Ontario had instructed their liquor boards to remove American alcohol from shelves in response to the ongoing trade tensions.
Despite the temporary pause in retaliatory actions, Premier Ford emphasized that the threat of tariffs from the US remains a significant concern for Canada and Ontario. He highlighted that President Trump may continue to leverage tariffs as a negotiating tool, especially during future discussions on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
Looking ahead, Ford urged both countries to maintain unity and shift their focus towards addressing challenges posed by China, rather than engaging in trade disputes with each other.
