Only government with claim worse than Liz Truss's premiership was Boris Johnson's

The only government with a claim to be worse than Liz Truss ’s premiership was the one led by Boris Johnson.

His three years in charge of the country turned British politics into a circus and degraded standards on many levels. His blunders during the pandemic, where he was far too slow to lock down, cost lives.

He and his staff partied illegally in Downing Street while the rest of us made sacrifices in abiding by the rules. His handling of the Chris Pincher scandal, which involved Johnson giving him a job despite knowing of serious allegations against him, was grim.

Little wonder Tory MP s belatedly turned on him, resigning en masse from his Cabinet and forcing him out of office. He was wholly unsuited for the role of PM and his flaws brought him down.

Despite being one of the worst prime ministers in UK history, Johnson is trying to make a comeback by replacing Truss. It is nauseating that someone who dragged ethics into the gutter wants his old job back months after he resigned in disgrace.

The country needs a steady hand who can stabilise the economy, not a bumbling oaf who tries to lie his way out of problems. The prospect of Johnson returning also shows the contempt the Tories have for voters. They inflicted the hopeless Truss on the public without an election and want to do the same with Johnson.

We could end up with Johnson in No10 after a vote of 300-plus MPs and an online ballot of party members. Westminster has become a farce that is making people poorer and wrecking their lives.

This is all on the Tories and Johnson would only make it worse. Voters should decide the next PM and a general election should be called with immediate effect.

Rod’s good sense

QUITTING while you’re ahead doesn’t come naturally. When someone gets to the top, they want to stay there. Not many sense when the time is right to bow out with their reputation intact.

But Rod Stewart appears to know the value of a good outro. Our gravel-voiced favourite released Maggie May, possibly his most famous song, 51 years ago and has been riding high ever since. Yesterday’s announcement that he’s calling time on epic rock ‘n’ roll performances came when he’s arguably as popular as ever.

Instead, the family man wants to pare back his performing from huge arenas to low-key folk clubs. Rod is sure to finish touring with a flourish – but thankfully he’s not ready to hang up his mic for good just yet.
