Class X students in Andhra Pradesh fared poorly in the first Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination conducted post COVID-19 pandemic compared to the pre-COVID exams, as only 67.26% of the total 6.15 lakh candidates have passed.
The exams were conducted by the Board of Secondary Education in April 2022 after a gap of two years owing to COVID-19 pandemic in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic years.
The pass percentage was the lowest in the past several years. During the two years of COVID pandemic, all the students who applied for the examination were declared pass and in 2019 the pass percentage was 94.88%. The pass percentage in 2018 was 94.48% while it was 91.92% in 2017, 94.52% in 2016 and 91.41% in 2015.
Minister for Education Botcha Satyanarayana released the results along with officials of the Education Department here on Monday.
Mr. Satyanarayana said 6,15,908 students appeared for the examination, of which 4,14,281 passed. Over 3.17 lakh students passed in first class while 69,597 passed in second class and 26,895 passed in third class. The remaining 2,01,627 (32.7%) failed in one or more subjects, he said.
Girls fare better
Girls achieved a higher pass percentage as 2,11,380 (70.70%) of the 2,99,088 girls who appeared for the examination passed. The pass percentage among boys was only 64.02. A total of 3,16,820 boys appeared for the exam and only 2,02,821 of them have passed.
Prakasam district registered highest pass percentage at 78.30% while Anantapur registered lowest pass percentage at 49.7%.
AP Residential Schools secured highest pass percentage of 91.10 while government schools secured lowest pass percentage of 50.10.
Most of the candidates failed in Mathematics, General Science and Social Studies exams, and pass percentage of English medium candidates is 77.55, while it is 43.97 for Telugu medium candidates
All fail in 71 schools
Mr. Satyanarayana said that the students of 11,671 schools appeared for the exam and 797 schools achieved a 100% pass percentage while all the students in 71 schools failed. Of the 71 schools which registered zero pass percentage 31 are private schools, 18 are aided schools, the Minister stated.
Supplementary exams
Mr. Satyanarayana said supplementary examination would be conducted from July 6 to July 15 and the fee could be paid from June 7.
He said disturbances caused by COVID-19 pandemic impacted the performance of the students in the SSC examination, and to help the students the Education Department would conduct special classes from June 13.
Regarding recounting and re-verification, the Minister said that candidates could apply within 15 days and also get a copy of answer booklets.
