Ongoing overnight road closures highlighted to Hamilton motorists

South Lanarkshire Council has reminded residents of overnight road closures in Hamilton which began yesterday and will last for one week.

The affected areas include the slip road on to Motherwell Road, which is closed from 9.30am until 3.30pm, to enable teams to carry out improvement works.

The second phase of major improvement works will see overnight lane closures at the roundabout on Motherwell Road in Hamilton from 6pm this evening (June 9), until 6am tomorrow.

Phase three will once again see lane closures on the roundabout and approaches taking place from 6pm until 6am on Friday (June 10) and Saturday (June 11), this is to allow the inner two lanes of the roundabout to be resurfaced.

The fourth phase will begin on Sunday (June 12) at 6pm until Monday (June 13) at 6am. A diversion will be in place for traffic travelling to Motherwell to allow access to Motherwell Road via Asda Roundabout at Palace Grounds Road slip road.

The fifth phase will be from Monday (June 13) at 6pm until Tuesday (June 14) at 6am. Blackwell Lane will be closed from Motherwell Road roundabout to Townhead Street and traffic will be diverted via Palace Grounds Road, Muir Street, Almada Street, Union Street, Auchincampbell Road, Kemp Street, Gateside Street and Duke Street.

The last phase will be from Tuesday (June 14) at 6pm until Wednesday (June 15) at 6pm, where access to Palace Grounds Road will be diverted via Low Patrick Street, Duke Street, Brandon Street, Union Street, Almada Street, Muir Street. Access to Keith Street will be via Low Patrick Street, Duke Street, Leechlee Road and Cadzow Street.

Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s community and enterprise resources committee, Councillor Robert Brown, said: “This is a significant route for traffic travelling in and out of Hamilton and although a substantial piece of work is taking place, the vast majority of it will take place overnight to try and minimise disruption.

“If you are going to be using this area during these times please allow additional time for all journeys, take note of the restrictions in place and plan your journey accordingly.

“Access for businesses/residents who live or work within the closure will be maintained wherever possible. There may be instances where access and egress will be significantly delayed depending on the stage of works on site. If you wish to avoid this, it may be advisable to park your vehicle outside the road closure prior to works starting. Traffic Marshals and site staff will be there to advise and assist residents during the works.

“We apologise for any inconvenience that may occur during these essential road improvement works.”
