Glitching breakbeats, soaring melodies and lyrics about the addictive pull of our phones. This is the infectiously high-energy output of New York-based siblings Angel and Lulu Prost, AKA Frost Children. They began releasing music together when they were forced to move back home from college to St Louis, Missouri at the start of the pandemic. Since then, Frost Children have developed a varied catalogue that spans their internet-based influences. Their 2021 debut album, Elixir Rejection, traded on the breakneck speed of hyperpop and club-ready jungle, while 2022’s follow-up, Spiral, moved further into synth-based video game soundtrack references.
Both records have embedded the group further into the DIY New York downtown scene, merging dancefloor beats with notoriously fiery live shows, where the duo might jump around in SpongeBob SquarePants outfits while channelling the harsh EDM maximalism of acts such as Skrillex.
Frost Children’s newly released album, Speed Run, is poised to be a breakout, slowing their freneticism in favour of increasingly radio-friendly songs. Tracks such as All I Got and Flatline are filled with bubbly pop melodies and soft, almost-whispered vocals, while others such as Hi 5 touch on the group’s harsh edge thanks to a euphoric synth motif. “Frost Children is a documentation of the way Angel and I bond,” Lulu said in a recent interview. Their unpredictable and invigorating music harnesses the unspoken connection only siblings can have.
