A former Big Bash League and state cricketer has faced court accused of sexually abusing and grooming a child.

Aaron William Summers, who played for the Hobart Hurricanes as well as Tasmania in the one-day competition, appeared in Hobart Magistrates Court for the first time on Wednesday.

He is accused of the penetrative sexual abuse of a young person and grooming with the intention of exposing a child or young person to indecent material.

Both offences allegedly occurred in Hobart on January 16, 2018 - a time when Summers was part of the Hurricanes roster.

The 28-year-old was extradited from the Northern Territory to Tasmania on Monday.

Summers, a fast bowler, made his one and only appearance for the Hurricanes against the Melbourne Renegades in 2017.

In 2020, he became the first foreign player to play in Pakistan's revamped domestic cricket competition.
