There is one simple trick every driver should know if they want to avoid a £1,000 fine.
Every car on the road in the UK has to have an MOT. This is an annual inspection that checks the most important parts on your vehicle to make sure they meet the legal standards. An MOT lasts for a year. The date it runs out is printed on your current MOT pass certificate.
If you miss this date, you can be fined up to £1,000 for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT. To stop anyone from missing this date, the Government has a free reminder service that will send you a text message or email when your MOT is due.

When you sign up, you’ll get a reminder four weeks before your MOT is due and two weeks before your MOT is due, if you still haven’t had it tested. You’ll also get alerts that your vehicle no longer has an MOT.
You just need the vehicle’s number plate (registration number) and a mobile phone number or email address. You’ll get a reminder every year until you unsubscribe.

Earlier this week, the DVSA urged drivers to book their MOT test in advance as new research reveals thousands of Brits are putting off having their car serviced. Car Insurance Expert at Confused.com, Alex Kindred said: "The general running costs and maintenance of driving a vehicle can be expensive. Our latest research found that this year, nearly 1 in 4 (24%) of motorists are willing to sacrifice a vehicle service so that they save a bit of money.
"An MOT is a legal requirement and is there to protect all road users...It's important for motorists to keep on top of their vehicle maintenance, such as servicing and repairs. Failing to do so could result in an MOT failure."
