One Show's Alex Jones’ unusual rise to fame - raunchy game show and mortifying sacking

The One Show host Alex Jones recently announced she is stepping down from the show temporarily as she prepares to welcome her third child.

Alex, 44, is expecting a baby girl with insurance broker husband Charlie Thompson, a little sister for their sons Teddy, four, and Kit, two.

The Welsh presenter posted a selfie on her Instagram account in a white shirt and blue jeans, smiling into the camera as she wrote: "That’s me done on @bbctheoneshow for a week.

"I’m going to spend some time with the boys before I get too massive to move.

"This shirt is a handy one for pregnancy."

Alex, who hosts the show alongside Ronan Keating, is being replaced by Emma Willis for the time being.

She previously revealed she had thought it might be too late for her to have more children, and told Closer : “It's a huge gift.

"I suppose deep down I would never have said it because we were so lucky to have two lovely boys, but having a girl was always something that was there.

"I thought our time had passed and it wasn't going to happen," she added.

And their baby news was all the more special after Alex had suffered a miscarriage in 2017, at roughly nine weeks.

Alex told Stella magazine: "That was really hard. It hit us like a ton of bricks.

"It's really odd. You're in that room looking for answers that you're never going to get.

"You're thinking: 'Have I done something wrong? What did I do differently?'

"'Was it because we flew a long way? Was I too stressed? Was I putting too much pressure on myself?'"

Dedicated to her job, Alex returned to host The One Show an hour after she found out about her miscarriage, of her own volition - explaining she did not know what she would do otherwise.

Alex's rise to TV stardom was a steady one, but she trained as a ballerina in her hometown of Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, in Wales, learning Welsh as her second language at school.

She then went on to study theatre, film and television at Aberystwyth University, and sat her final exams in Magaluf, Spain.

Alex then ventured on screen - but it was not as a host, but rather a contestant on the Sky One game show Prickly Heat.

The show was hosted by Davina McCall, Denise Van Outen and Julian Clary, and ran from 1998-2001, encompassing three series.

The steamy show saw teams battle it out in racy games on the beach, including squishing grapes in their underwear.

The contestants would also get it on at local clubs and would sometimes even get intimate with each other.

Alex told Wales Online : "I remember watching Play School as a child and thinking, ‘That looks like a fun job’.

"I went to Aberystwyth University to study theatre, film and TV, which didn’t please my dad very much, but I managed to pass, even though I sat my final exams in Magaluf, with Davina McCall as my adjudicator, because I was a contestant on her Sky One show Prickly Heat!"

Upon leaving university, Alex became a television researcher but was sacked twice - once because she accidentally mistook Mike Peters from the band The Alarm, for a workman who had come to fix the alarm in the office.

Alex said on The One Show: "I was sacked from lots of early jobs, don’t worry, it’s passage."

She also told The Guardian: "I was really forgetful and dippy and I think it was too much responsibility for a 21-year-old girl."

Aged 21, Alex landed her first ever presenting job at now-defunct BBC Choice, and she later joined S4C to host a Welsh language singing programme.

She spent the next ten years on Welsh language shows, mostly in children's television, on shows including Popty and Chwa, before branching out into S4C travel series Tocyn and rugby magazine show Jonathan.

Alex told Wales Online at the time: "Jonathan Davies anchors the show, with help from referee Nigel Owens and Rowland Phillips, and I’ve been brought in as the token girl to keep them in line.

“I’m from Ammanford and so I’ve always followed rugby and I’ve always loved the Six Nations but watching it and enjoying it and then having to analyse it are totally different things."

Alex continued: "I have no intention of stopping the children’s TV but it’s fab to be able to work with a different audience.

"I think children will still tune into it with their mums and dads and it’s a massive honour that S4C think I can do it.”

She was also working on kid's fashion programme Salon at the time, and confessed it was ideal for her as she classes herself a "shopaholic".

She had the odd stint on national TV such as on Rise for Channel 4, and she covered for Angela Jay on Real Radio, which is broadcast in Northern England, Scotland, Wales and Yorkshire.

In 2010, Alex landed her job on The One Show, replacing Christine Lampard, then Bleakley, with her co host Jason Manford, who took over from Adrian Chiles.

BBC daytime controller Liam Keelan said at the time: "Her screen test with Jason was outstanding and from that moment we knew she was the one.

"We are really proud to have Alex on board and look forward to introducing her to The One show audience.

"She has a lovely sense of humour and she's the perfect fit for Jason Manford as the show begins its next journey."

Alex went on to host Let's Dance for Comic Relief alongside Claudia Winkleman, and reported on Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding on the BBC in 2011.

She also hosts The Sport Relief Games Show with Matt Baker and John Inverdale, and BBC One gymnastics competition Tumble.

She starred on Strictly Come Dancing in 2011, paired with James Jordan, and finished in fifth place.

Alex has presented BBC's Shop Well For Less? with Steph McGovern, and hosted her own one-off fertility documentary on BBC One, called Alex Jones - Fertility and Me, in 2016.

In it, Alex explored the fertility issues affecting people over the world and the pioneering science hoping to revolutionise treatment.

The star was pregnant at the time, with her first child, Teddy, who was born in 2017.
