Sunderland have released their retained list ahead of the 2023-24 season confirming Carl Winchester as the only senior departure. During the season, the Black Cats handed Corry Evans and Dan Neil new contracts, and triggering options to extend those of Alex Pritchard, Danny Batth, and Ross Stewart.
That left Winchester as the only senior player whose deal expires this summer and the midfielder - who spent last season on loan at League One Shrewsbury Town - last week said that he would be leaving Wearside at the end of the campaign. Sunderland's trio of loan players, Amad, Joe Gelhardt, and Edouard Michut, have returned to Manchester United, Leeds United, and Paris St-Germain respectively.
Sunderland had the option to sign Michut on a permanent basis but earlier this week the club announced that the 20-year-old would be returning to France. Sunderland have offered new contracts to U21 players Michael Spellman and Harry Gardiner.

Winger Spellman had a loan spell at Whitby Town earlier in the season, while striker Gardiner spent the final few months of the campaign on loan at South Shields. Aside from Winchester's departure, eight U21 players have been released, including midfielder Harrison Sohna, goalkeeper Jacob Carney, defender Ethan Kachosa, and midfielder Tom Scott, who have all made first-team appearances for the club.
