One person has been taken to hospital after a three vehicle crash caused major rush hour delays in Newcastle.
Emergency services were alerted to the collision on Etherstone Avenue in High Heaton at around 5.50pm on Tuesday. Northumbria Police officers and paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service arrived at the scene while the A188 Benton Road was closed.
The collision, which was outside the Sainsbury's, caused disruption in the area with bus services suffering delays and heavy traffic in the area. Drivers were urged to use an alternative route as queues of traffic built up.
An ambulance took one patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle. The extent of the person's injuries are not currently known. Just before 7pm, the A188 Benton Road fully reopened and traffic began to ease.
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 5.49pm this evening to report of a three vehicle road traffic collision outside Sainsbury's on Etherstone Avenue, High Heaton. We sent one ambulance and took one patient to the RVI in Newcastle."
