At least one person has been killed and several others have sustained minor injuries after a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside of a hotel owned by US president-elect Donald Trump in Las Vegas, police say.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, at 8.40am (US time), authorities were alerted to the Trump Towers — a hotel owned by US President-elect Donald Trump — after a 2024 Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside of the hotel’s front doors.
In a press conference following the incident, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill confirmed that the Cybertruck “pulled up to the front of the hotel” when smoke started to come from the vehicle, which was then followed by a large explosion.
One person, who was in the vehicle, has been confirmed dead and several others sustained minor injuries from the incident.
Following the explosion, Tesla CEO and founder Elon Musk, issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “The whole Tesla senior team is investigating this matter right now.”
“Will post more information as soon as we learn anything,” he continued.
“We’ve never seen anything like this.”
While local authorities have not shared what the cause of the explosion was, Musk shared an update, claiming it was caused by fireworks or a bomb.
We have now confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented Cybertruck and is unrelated to the vehicle itself.

“All vehicle telemetry was positive at the time of the explosion.”
In a reply to another X user, Elon wrote that law enforcement “currently believes it was most likely intentional”, however, authorities have yet to confirm this claim.
Donald Trump’s son, Eric Trump, also issued a statement regarding the incident on X, thanking emergency responders for their help.
“The safety and well-being of our guests and staff remain our top priority. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Las Vegas Fire Department and local law enforcement for their swift response and professionalism,” he penned.
At the time of writing, Sheriff McMahill said that they believe “everything is safe now” and that a press conference will take place following further investigations into the explosion.
More info to come.
