A man was shot outside a passenger terminal at a Chicago’s O’Hare international airport, one of the busiest in the US, in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.
The incident followed an altercation among multiple people, according to law enforcement
The 25-year-old suffered two gunshot wounds to the lower body, according to the Chicago police department. He was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. Another person was being interviewed, police added.
The incident followed a fistfight that broke out shortly after midnight, according to media reports, and ended with the man being shot during the brawl.
The police did not discuss publicly any possible motives for the altercation or the shooting or whether those involved knew each other. Dozens of shell casings were seen on the ground and ABC reported that the police were investigating a white BMW that was parked outside nearby Terminal 1.
The shooting happened on a street outside Terminal 2, a police news release said. Local television reports showed what appeared to be a shattered window near the baggage claim area.
Arrival lanes at all terminals were fully open by 5.15am, O’Hare said in a statement. Airlines that use Terminal 2 include JetBlue, Air Canada and Alaska Airlines.
Raquel Barajas told local station WPIV-TV that a bullet hit her window, waking her up.
“I was terrified, so I honestly, these ear plugs saved my life,” she added. “Getting up would have made me more scared and put me in a worse scenario, so I’m just really grateful to be alive right now.”
Another person staying at a nearby hotel told Fox 32 that he heard “a bunch of single shots”.
