'One major storm': BBC weather presenter issues stark warning for Scotland

A BBC weather presenter has issued a stark warning as a “major” storm looks set to hit Scotland on Friday.

Judith Ralston – who has presented the weather for the BBC for more than two decades – posted about Storm Eowyn on Twitter/X saying she had “never seen anything like it” in her career.

An amber weather warning for wind covers the south of Scotland and stretches up towards Glasgow and Edinburgh from 6am until 9pm Friday.

“Very strong winds and widespread disruption” is expected on Friday as a result of Storm Eowyn, the Met Office said.

Ralston urged people to keep up to date with Met Office warnings.

She said: “This is one major storm. I’ve not seen anything like it in my career.

“Please, please keep up to date with the  @metofficeScot @metoffice warnings there are numerous out right now including an amber high wind.”

Winds of up to 90mph are predicted in some areas – particularly near the coast – with meteorologists warning of a risk to life.

Gusts could cause power cuts and travel disruption as well as damage to buildings.

The Met Office has also issued a yellow warning for snow covering most of the country including parts of the south of Scotland, Glasgow, most of the Highlands and the Western Isles.

The change to conditions is being caused by a powerful jet stream pushing low pressure across the Atlantic and towards the UK, following a recent cold spell over North America.

The Met Office has advised securing loose items outside homes, including bins, garden furniture, trampolines and sheds, and gathering torches and batteries in case of any power cut.

Those travelling in this “disruptive spell of weather” are urged to be cautious, as road, rail, airports and ferries are likely to be affected.
