One in ten Edinburgh residents 'reduced to tears' by dental issues

One in ten Edinburgh residents are reported to have been reduced to tears by dental issues according to a new study looking at dental happiness of Brits.

The findings in the report also stated that over one in ten are unhappy with their smile and that just under one fifth of Edinburgh residents were unhappy with the condition of their teeth.

The study was commissioned by European dentist Dr Martina Karlo after a large wave of Brits came to her practice after negative reports of "Turkey Teeth".

The study surveyed 2000 Brits and details a wide range of dental anxieties that are plaguing people in their everyday lives.

According to the report 8.9 per cent of Edinburgh locals had been reduced to tears due to their smile with a further 11.4 per cent saying they would never show their teeth in photos.

Singletons in Edinburgh hoping to land a date on an app may have their chances reduced significantly due to dental issues as nearly one in ten residents say they would reject potential matches on a dating app over their teeth with a further 15.2 per cent outright refusing to date anyone with teeth they consider to be bad.

The study also revealed that Edinburgh residents on average spent more time than the rest of the UK worrying about their teeth per day and 43 per cent saying they would feel more confident if they had better teeth.

Dr Martina Karlo said: “Many Brits are in limbo, unable to get the treatment they want. That has a drastic, negative impact on their lives.

“Our UK patients regularly tell us how they now see themselves through social media and video calls. Likewise Love Island and celebrity culture has changed perceptions of how the ‘ideal smile’ looks.

“Britons are more conscious of their teeth than ever before, something that is backed up by these findings. Modern dentistry can deliver a positive and life-affirming change for people who see their smile transformed.”

“Every year we see more patients from the UK. Most want treatments they can’t afford at home. We transform their smile, bite, and oral health and that literally changes their life for the better, bringing increased happiness and confidence.”

However, Dr Karlo added: “Unlike some of the cheaper dental tourism hotspots, Croatia is bound by incredibly strict EU laws and regulations. Safety and standards are paramount, which gives patients peace of mind they simply cannot get in places like Turkey.”
