Crews from across Swansea and Carmarthen rushed to deal with a fire which spread 'rapidly' through a three-storey terraced property on Murray Street, Llanelli. One person was hurt in the fire which spread through the first and second floors.
Mid and West Wales Fire & Rescue Service said the fire broke out at around 5.49pm on Tuesday, June 20, and was attended by crews from Llanelli, Tumble, Pontarddulais, Pontyates, Morriston, Gorseinon, Kidwelly, Swansea Central, Swansea West, Carmarthen and Ammanford.
A spokesman for the fire service said: "On arrival, crews were faced with a rapidly developing fire on the first and second floors of a three-storey terrace property above a commercial premises.
"The complex building and fire spread required the incident to be sectorised and excellent offensive firefighting by crews significantly reduced the effects of the fire. As well as the challenges present at the incident, there were two further property fires in Llanelli while this incident was ongoing (at 7.12pm and 7.26pm), the dynamic standby arrangements put in place by Fire Control ensured that these incidents were attended and resolved in a timely manner and were testament to the experience and knowledge of the operators in the control room." Crews continued to monitor and secure the property and left the scene at 10.51pm. Pictures released by the fire service show the aftermath of the fire, including damage to the roof of the building which is burnt and partly collapsed.
Manager of The Salvation Army charity shop on Murray Street, Tony Chappell, 61, was called by emergency services to come and open the shop so the premises could be checked due to its proximity to the building on fire. Mr Chappell said the shop building was unaffected and the police and fire service did an excellent job of closing the road and managing the incident. You can read more stories about Carmarthen here
