One person has been taken to hospital after a car collided with a lamppost on the A1 Western Bypass overnight.
The individual is not thought to have suffered serious injuries. The A1 was closed between Kenton Bar and Gosforth for around an hour and a half - with the police and ambulance service alerted to an incident at around 3.20am.
Northumbria Police said the incident had taken place on the northbound carriageway and involved damage to street furniture in the Gosforth Park area which "blocked the carriageway". North East Ambulance Service were also on the scene.
A spokesperson said: "It came in at 3.20am. NEAS attended and took one party to hospital. It was a one-vehicle RTC (road traffic collision) with damage to street furniture. There were no serious injuries reported."
The police said the road had been reopened at around 5am.
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 03.19h today to attend a road traffic collision on the A1 northbound. We took one patient to hospital."
National Highways closed the road in both directions and had a diversion in place, but this has now been resolved.
