'One absence too many' - Jonas Eidevall makes honest Arsenal admission after Man United defeat

Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall admitted Leah Williamson's injury may have been one too many for his side as they fell to a narrow 1-0 loss at the hands of Manchester United on Wednesday night.

The Gunners are in the midst of an intense title race and yesterday's fixture at Leigh Sports Village was a crunch clash between two sides battling it out for the trophy. However, with 15 minutes gone, concern filled the stadium as England captain Williamson hit the turf and immediately signalled to the bench.

She limped off the pitch with the support of medical staff but now faces an anxious wait to discover the extent of the problem. For Arsenal, in the closing stages of the first half, they found themselves a goal down as Alessia Russo fired the hosts in front.

Eidevall's side were unable to respond in the second half and they now sit six points adrift of the leaders in the standings, albeit with a game in hand. The Arsenal boss acknowledged the sheer number of injuries in his squad, after Kim Little was also ruled out for the rest of the season earlier this week, has started to take its toll.

"Of course it's not good that she (Williamson) had to come off," Eidevall told BBC Sport post-match. "You see the pitch, it is a pitch that has a lot more to (be desired).

"I think it's going to continue here with the schedule we have and pitches like that, players are going to get injured. That is something that we all need to improve on, the facilities where we play, so we can keep the players on the pitch.

"We spoke about that before the game, that we have managed very well so far this season, having players missing. But I think with all things accumulating here, with suspended players and Leah (Williamson) coming off injured, it was one absence too many for us."

Arsenal are back in Champions League action this weekend with a trip to face German side Wolfsburg and their next WSL game is against Leicester City on May 5. There's currently five games remaining between now and the end of the season, including another top-of-the-table clash against Chelsea in a few weeks time.
