A cordon has been set up which covers the pavement outside the Omni Centre where the incident is understood to have taken place, as suited detectives have also been pictured at the scene.
An eye witness who passed shortly after the incident said: "It all happened so fast. Loads of police arrived, there were five vans and multiple police cars. An ambulance took someone away with blue lights on shortly after.
"The police taped off a huge section of the pavement opposite St James Quarter and wouldn't tell anyone what had happened."
Images from the scene show various police vans, cars and ambulances parked at the side of the busy road at Picardy Place. Police say they cannot comment further at this time.
