
New Delhi: J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday backed Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's dissenting views on the appointment of the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
Abdullah emphasized that as the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi has every right to express his dissent and provide an alternative perspective.
"As the leader of the Opposition, he has every right to dissent. That's why he is there - to provide his point of view. He is not just there to agree with whatever the government suggests or proposes," J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on being asked about Rahul Gandhi's dissent on the appointment of the new CEC.

He added that Rahul Gandhi has exercised his right as member of the committee.
Omar Abdullah Meets Amit Shah

Rahul Gandhi Expresses Strong Dissent
Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi expressed strong dissent on the process by which the new Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar was appointed, criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi government's decision to exclude the Chief Justice of India from the selection committee.

The Governemnt on Monday night announced the appointment of Gyanesh Kumar as the new Chief Election Commissioner, hours after the meeting of the Prime Minister-led panel in which the Leader of Opposition asked the government to defer the meeting in view of the Supreme Court hearing in the connection with matter.
