Olympics: Team GB medal haul prediction revealed as Paris Games approach

Great Britain are tipped to finish the Paris Olympics in fourth place in the medals table.

Gracenote, which predicts the medal tally and final positions for each Games, is forecasting a total of 63 medals for Team GB.

In its model, that would put the British with the third-highest medal count behind the United States and China, but pushed into fourth by hosts France by virtue of their higher predicted gold medal tally (27 to 17).

The anticipated haul is largely similar to the last Games in Tokyo, where Team GB ended fourth in the table with 64 medals, 22 of which were gold.

In its report, Gracenote wrote: “Great Britain can sustain its winning performance of 60 or more medals for a fourth successive Games.

“British success over the past three summer Olympics has been built on having medal winners in at least 20 sports.

“Gracenote’s final virtual medal table has winners in 21 different sports, suggesting this trend is set to continue.

“Prior to the 2012 Olympics, Great Britain had not won medals in at least 20 sports for over 100 years, since hosting [the Games] in 1908.”
