The Olympics delivered a first full day of action at Paris 2024 on Saturday after a memorable opening ceremony.

Team GB earned its first medal of the Games after Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen claimed diving bronze in dramatic circumstances, winning Britain’s first medal in women’s diving in 64 years.

That was followed by a superb road cycling silver from Anna Henderson in the women’s individual time trial amid treacherous rain in Paris but there was heartbreak for Josh Tarling – who just missed out in the men’s TT after finishing in fourth place due to a puncture.

The swimming took centre stage this evening with Team GB’s focus on Adam Peaty as he cruised through his semi-final in his bid to win three consecutive 100m breaststroke Olympic gold medals. But the most eagerly-anticipated race of the day, and perhaps the meet, saw Katie Ledecky, Ariarne Titmus and Summer McIntosh against each other in the women’s 400m freestyle. It was Australia’s Titmus who defended her title ahead of McIntosh, with Ledecky trailing in third.

And hosts France completed a dream men’s rugby sevens triumph as Antoine Dupont inspired the hosts to dethrone two-time defending Olympic champions Fiji in a thrilling final at the Stade de France.
