Oloapu in NRL limbo after release from Bulldogs

Karl Oloapu faces an uncertain future after being released by Canterbury more than a year after suffering a career-threatening neck injury.

The Bulldogs paid a $500,000 transfer fee to lure Oloapu, then rated the hottest young halves prospect in the NRL, from Brisbane in 2023.

But after playing seven first-grade games that year, Oloapu was diagnosed with a bulging disc in his neck and told his career could be over.

The 20-year-old has not played since undergoing successful surgery ahead of the 2024 season, but said last year he was aiming to return in 2025.

On Tuesday, the Bulldogs confirmed Oloapu had been released from the final two years of his contract.

"This has been a challenging period for Karl and his family," said Bulldogs general manager of football Phil Gould.

"He's shown tremendous courage throughout this process and we've worked closely with him to provide all possible support.

"While we're disappointed things haven't worked out as hoped, Karl's long-term welfare along with his playing future have always been our primary concern."

Reports linked Oloapu with a move to the Dolphins in January, and the youngster had relocated to Redcliffe to live with his family amid his recovery.

But an immediate return to the NRL at a rival club appears unlikely.

AAP has been told Oloapu's injury was the decisive factor in the mutual agreement to a release him from his Bulldogs contract.
