Olly Murs forced to defend new single as he's asked about 'upsetting' backlash to 'controlling' lyrics on BBC Breakfast

Olly Murs has said he has been left 'upset' by backlash to his new single after it was slammed by a DJ for portraying him as a 'sad, controlling boyfriend'. The singer returned earlier this year with new music, releasing his first single, Die of a Broken Heart in October and announcing details of his first album in over four years, titled Marry Me.

Back on a roll with his music career, Olly has released his next single, titled I Hate You When You're Drunk, and it appears the lyrics haven't gone down well with everyone. The track dropped on Friday (December 2) and appears to be criticising a loved one for getting too drunk on a night out.

Some of the lyrics include: "Oh, you’re slurrin’ all your words, there’s make-up on my shirt / You’re dancin’ on the tables, can’t you see / That you look like a mess and you’re singin’ Whitney?"

DJ Shaun Keaveny was among the to have slammed the lyrics but during an appearance on BBC Breakfast on Tuesday (December 6), Olly addressed some of the negative responses when hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay asked him to respond to those who have deemed the lyrics 'controlling'.

"I mean, it's obviously upsetting to think that people took it that way because it was not that intention," the 38-year-old replied. "It was a song that I really related to in the studio. It was a song that was written eight years ago."

Explaining more about the song itself, Olly added: "At the start of January, I had a New Year's resolution I wouldn't drink for a year. And so I've been out and my friends, my family, different people [and I was like] 'Oh my god, I hate you when you’re drunk.' So when we wrote the song, it was never about Amelia [Tank - Olly's fiancée] or anyone. It was just a song that we really related with at that time."

The former X Factor runner-up added: "So for people to take it that way. I was really upset by it. I can’t believe people have taken it that way, which is a shame as I think the song is really great... You understand the type of artist I am. It was just more in a cheeky, fun way.

"And if there was anyone that I would thought would get offended by it would probably be Amelia, if she thought it was about her, but it actually wasn’t. But, hey, we move on."

During his appearance on the BBC One news show, Olly also admitted to have more frequenct arguments with Amelia. Olly announced in June that he and bodybuilder Amelia would be tying the know after he got down on one knee during a Bank Holiday hike.

Olly, who has been in a relationship with Amelia since 2019, said ahead of their nuptials set to take place next summer: "Me and Amelia, we’ve been together for three and a half years and we have a little spat but since we’ve got engaged and started planning the wedding, we’ve been having more little arguments, do you know what I mean?

"Like, 'You haven’t told me about these things, you haven’t approved this yet, you haven’t given me an answer on this yet.'" Sally the jokingly branded Olly a "groomzilla" telling him things such as the colour of the napkins don’t really matter.

But he argued back: “See I didn’t think I cared about that stuff but I do, it’s weird, isn’t it? Like, 'No actually, I don't want them to be that colour'. But saying that, jokes aside we are really enjoying the process, it’s really great fun and we’re really excited for it next summer."
