Olivia Gadecki into WTA semi-finals and world top 100

Olivia Gadecki is on the verge of becoming Australia's top-ranked female player as she enjoys the biggest week of her tennis life in Mexico.

Gadecki advanced to her first WTA semi-final on Saturday (AEST) after beating Martina Trevisan 6-2 3-6 6-1 at the Guadalajara Open.

The 22-year-old qualifier, who is ranked No.152, converted eight of 10 break-point chances to beat Trevisan, who was a Roland Garros semi-finalist in 2022.

Though the Gold Coast-born star struggled with her first serve on Friday, she still managed to win 69 per cent of points on it, while recording four aces.

"There are a lot of things I am proud of this week," Gadecki said on-court after the match.

"Just coming out here and competing and giving myself the chance to do well this week ... I'm all around really proud of myself."

Gadecki arrived in Mexico with just two wins over top-100 players but has recorded three this week, including one over world No.11 Danielle Collins in the biggest win of her career.

It followed another impressive triumph over 2017 US Open champion and former world No.3 Sloane Stephens.

Gadecki is now poised to rise above Australia's highest-ranked female player Daria Saville, who is sidelined with a foot injury, into the world's top 100.

It also means Gadecki is likely to gain direct entry into a major for the first time in January at the Australian Open.

The right-hander reached the second round at Melbourne Park in 2023.

In the Guadalajara Open semi-finals, Gadecki will play Camila Osorio, who defeated Kamilla Rakhimova 7-6 (8-6) 6-1.

With the win, the 22-year-old Osorio became the first Colombian to reach the semis of a 500-level tournament.

In the other semi-final, fourth-seeded Caroline Garcia will face fifth-seeded Magdalena Frech, who advanced with a 6-4 6-3 victory over Marina Stakusic.

Garcia advanced earlier in a walkover after Marie Bouzkova withdrew due to an illness.

The tournament is being played on hard courts at the Complejo Panamericano de Tenis in Guadalajara.
